Backpacking in Antigua

Backpackers in Antigua

Antigua is the tourism capital of Guatemala. Almost all the tourists flee away from Guatemala City as soon as their airplane lands on the Aurora International Airport. Since Antigua is only 45 kilometers from Guatemala City and it is after all more charming and less expensive, many people come here. La Antigua has all the services you need to travel everywhere in Guatemala. Antigua has hotel accommodations for all the budgets. Actually, Guatemala is a very inexpensive destination and you can see many different things in about two weeks. You can be exposed to Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, colonial towns, Mayan, Hispanic and Garífuna peoples and cultures, tropical and cloud forests, exotic fauna and flora, exquisite Guatemalan and international cuisine, all with the budget of a backpacker. You can also do all this with a little more money and get better hotels and services. Not too bad for a tiny and complex country.

You can check Guatemala Tourism Institute or your Lonely Planet guide for more information.

One thing I would like to do before I die. 🙂

  • Sompopo: If you ever decide to come, I will take you for some Guatemalan beers or the best coffee in the world, your choice. Don’t tell the wife though.

  • You’re talking me into it, Rudy.

  • Rudy Giron-
Thanks for all your comments on las vegas daily photo… I appreciate a perspective other than my own, so thanks for your candor! It is interesting to learn how people view america outside of America, so your thoughts provoked new thoughts for me. Thanks again!

  • Wendi: I take it you mean the U.S. outside the U.S. because America is such a LARGE and DIVERSE continent. 😉

  • Rudy Giron-
    Email is
I didn’t mean to offend, if I did I’m sorry!

  • Wendi: you do not offend, that is why I put a wink-face next to the comment. I know how difficult it is to think outside the box and how can I blame you for expressing America when you mean the United States since you hear both terms used indistinctly all the time. I know!

  • your pictures really make me want to visit Antigua sometime. and if I were to come, I’d love to try that best coffee in the world 🙂

  • So Antigua is cheaper than Guatemala City, even though there are more tourists there? I have always been wanting to make it to the country and your descriptions sound great.
