Antigua’s Cathedral and Volcán de Agua

Cathedral and Volcán de Agua

This photo is for the benefit of Lessie and others who have commented about the mountains in the background in some of the recent photos. Actually, the mountain is Volcán de Agua or Water Volcano and it can be seen on many of the photos that have south perspective. Volcán de Agua towers 3,760 meters above the sea level to the South of La Antigua Guatemala.

One of these days I will get around to tell you the story behind Volcán de Agua and Volcán de Fuego, which are somehow involved with the genesis of the world. The name of the Water volcano in Maya is Hunapú.

This photo is also dedicated to all the people who are in need of a little sunshine. We are in the middle of winter now, but temperatures are around mid 20°C/70°F. To me, this is the best time of the year in Guatemala.

Public Transit In Antigua

Guatemalan Chicken Buses

LD talks about the differences in public transit between Toronto and Guatemala on her entry about Problem solved?. It is a bit unfair to compare the rural bus system in Guatemala, the country, with the modern transit system of Toronto, the city, but she manages to do a very interesting comparison of not only the vehicles, but the bus rides and the people who use them. LD’s entry is a very good read and since she writes so fluently, colorfully and intelligently; it is so difficult not to come back to her blog in a regular basis.

I talked about the public transportation system in Guatemala myself, back in August 1st, 2006 and then I said that the chicken buses make for great post cards and travel chronicles, but they do not make for a safe or good transportation system. Follow this link to see an interesting shot of the a chicken bus or here to see other photos of chicken buses I taken so far. LD, shame on you, how come you did “lift off” my photos, which have a Creative Commons license for you to use as a Share Alike site.

Sun-powered clock

someday, sunday, sundial, sun-powered clock

This clock might not be exactly a “Clockwork Orange” as the Big Ben (via London Daily Photo), but at least, we can say it is very energy-efficient. By the way, here is a little “overshare”, as Miss Jill calls it: Kubrick’s film, which I’ve seen over thirty times, and all the books by Charles Bukowski were my lifesaver in the 1990s. Nevermind Nirvana, of course.

Tree Branches on Fire

Tree branches on fire

Back on December 16th and 17th, 2006, I showed you what Parque Central (Central Park) looked like with the Christmas lights all over the trees at night. I managed to take another shot right when the lights come on, yet there’s still daylight available. I like the effect. This shot was taken from the second floor of the Ayuntamiento Building (the Muni, short for Municipalidad, as it is known locally).

Please, come back tomorrow for another yellow treat!

Wok'n Roll Chinese delivery

Chinese food is one of those things one can find anywhere in the world, yet it is never the same. Here you can see a Moo Goo Gai Pan combo with an egg roll and fried rice. I hope, one day, to have ‘Real’ Chinese Food in Hong Kong or Shanghai while visiting Lisi or Jing. In the mean time, this meal will have to do. Bon appetite!

Chinese Door Knocker

Door Knocker

Door knockers are an integral element of the Architecture of La Antigua Guatemala. How else can you knock on Heaven’s Door? Of course, you can find modern doorbell ringers, but they are no match to the beauty of the antique-looking door knockers.

Do you rather have a door knocker or a bell ringer?

Is either yellow a very popular color in Antigua or I have a tendency towards photographing yellow walls. I mention this because this is the third wallpaper I share with you and I just noticed they are all yellow.

Santiago’s Fountain

Santiago fountain and emblem

Yesterday I showed you a fountain with four streams. Today we have a rare find. This fountain is inside the Museo de Armas de Santiago, which is next door to the Ayuntamiento building or Municipalidad. Right above the fountain’s tank is the Santiago Emblem (Saint James) embossed on the wall. Although I see many photos of Antigua often, I haven’t seen this one.

Has anyone who’s been to La Antigua Guatemala seen this fountain before?

Four Streams

four streams

Fountains are very popular in La Antigua Guatemala. Fountains can be found everywhere: parks, restaurants, cafes, churches, schools, hotels, homes, government buildings, et-cetera. The most famous fountain is found in Central Park and it’s called the “La fuente de las sirenas” or Mermaids’ fountain.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend! Take it easy going into work on Monday morning.

Windows Vista in Antigua

No, I am not talking about the infamous and long overdue operating system from Redmond, Washington; I am simply showing a vista of a typical window corner in La Antigua Guatemala. In this case, this vista belongs to a window corner at Posada de los Leones (Lions’ Inn). I will bring more photos of the fabulous boutique hotel soon. I posted a similar window on May 4th, 2006.

Baroque Columns at El Carmen Ruins

The El Carmen Ruins show cases some of the most baroque-style architecture. Here you can see the details of the columns. Outside these ruins, on the streets, is where the handicraft and textiles market is located on the weekend; you can see the market and the ruins in context on the Selling Folk-ar on the street entry on November 29th.

Nicolas' Restaurant window

If I’m not mistaken, Isabella, from Naples, Florida Daily Photo, said that she became more aware of her surroundings after she began her daily photo blog. She thanked Eric, from Paris Daily Photo, for coming up a great idea, sharing it and creating the awesome community we now are. The same thing happen to me and to prove it I will show you one my favorites shots: Palo de Izote Tree. These trees are next door to my office in Antigua Guatemala and I had never seen them before, in four years. After I started this site on May 1st, I became really aware. Thanks Eric, we took the red pill.

To download the image as wallpaper, all you need to do is click the photo above and you will be taken to a larger-size image that you can download. The rest depends on the operating system you use.

By the way, this is the same wall as yesterday’s photo. Have an exceptional day!

Here is my first gift of the new year to you. This is textured wall of Nicolas, a five-star restaurant in Antigua Guatemala. I uploaded in high enough resolution so you can use it as a wallpaper for your desktop, if you like—of course. All you need to do is click the photo above and you will be taken to a larger-size image that you can download.

I promise I will take it easy with the political commentary. Have a great day!
