[...] Doña Luisa Xicotencatl on 4a Calle Oriente #12 has good breakfast and lunch selections but most locals go there for the sweets. I hear the banana bread is to die for (I couldn’t get my hands on any) and I can vouch for the blackberry tart. As good as my mum makes, and that is really saying something. Not too sweet, not too tart and at 18Q for a large slice with a huge bowl of icecream – it was a steal. [...]

[...] I can’t tell you that this is the best banana bread I’ve ever had. It is the best one I’ve ever made myself. The best banana bread I’ve ever had was at the Dona Luisa Bakery on 4a calle oriente in Antigua. I used to buy a loaf once or twice a week and eat it for breakfast and lunch and dinner sometimes. I don’t wax poetic about much of the food I encountered living in Guatemala but that banana bread was amazing. I wish I could replicate it. But since I can’t, this stuff is pretty darn good. (Source for photo is Antigua Daily Photo.)
A little over 29 years ago Dennis was the Best Man in my Wedding. The Wedding Cake was made at the house by Luisa and the other ladies. When the cake was being delivered to Guatemala City for the wedding an empty beer keg rolled onto the cake and did a little damage. It was still the best Carrot Cake I ever ate.
Terezinha and I still talk about that day and the cake. We now have two children (Francisco and Cassandra) that have families of their own, but to think it all started in Antigua over 29 years ago.
Do you still throw darts after closing time?

[...] Dot 2: The very same day, after reading the article above in my lunch hour, I walked back to the office and sure enough a plastic bag came dancing towards me, just like in the American Beauty film. So what was I to do, but to pull my camera and to start shooting this new enemy. This incident happened right in front of Doña Luisa Xicotencatl restaurant; one of LAG’s landmarks.
Oya: It is very mellow place, the food is great and the prices are reasonable. The bakery has no par in La Antigua Guatemala.

LD: Okay now I know where we'll have lunch next time you're in Guate. Should I make reservations soon?

Awww... one of my favorite Antigua places. I really do love that place. The food is great and so is the setting. And the art-- those mural-type paintings in the front room on the second floor are amazing.
