I have been informed or perhaps given a hint (or several) that as someone who only lived part of her childhood in Guatemala, I am not permitted to state my views in regards to human rights in said country. Let me rephrase that, perhaps I could state my views, but these are not welcomed or shall we say appreciated? After all, I am talking from the outside looking in. I've received this kind of reaction by family members, friends, and acquaintances. I find this reaction says more about them than anything else. I now understand the term "la memoria del silencio." It seems that things are supposed to disappear if they are not talked about. As someone who witnessed tragic events in her childhood I dislike the implicit message of silence I receive, but then again, I understand one ruffles more than a few feathers when one speaks of any country's track record on human rights (more so if this country is in conflict with its own history).

On a recent post I described the schizophrenic attitude towards human rights Guatemalan people have. It is often heard that Human Rights are just there to defend criminals, which in any other place would sound like a contradiction, but apparently not in Guate.
On my godmotherland I am bombarded for just causes and events like this and it had made me wonder "what for?". I am becoming cynic on my old age I guess.
