Stencil Art Around Antigua Guatemala by Rudy Giron

Graffiti and Stencil street art is not commonly found in Antigua Guatemala, so every time I find one I capture it with my camera. That is because of the ephemeral nature of graffiti and stencil art. A few captures found in the archives of AntiguaDailyPhoto are Rigoberta Menchú for President from 2007, and Wonder Woman from August 2012. By the way, the stencil art piece above I found it on the entrance to San Juan del Obispo.

Once again, what’s your opinion regarding stencil street art? Do you think there should be more or less of it?

    The nature of street art is anarchic and there is an implicit arrogance in forcing it upon the public regardless of whether they wish to see it or not. In a town with the history and architectural style of LAG, I believe this would seriously detract from the aesthetic value of the town and its historic buildings. We have a very talented artist over here in the UK called Banksy, who has become a cultish figure in graffiti street art….had he not just “gone and done it”, he would be unknown;so I guess there is a flip side to every argument.
