International Rugby Matches in Antigua Guatemala
Rugby is a new sport in Guatemala, with a little over five years in the country it has found many fans and players. There’s even a rugby league now in Guatemala. The Rugby League of Guatemala is now supported and sanctioned by the Guatemalan Olympic Committee and it’s in the process of becoming a federation, fancy definition which means it will be a major league.
Last Sunday, November 18, Antigua Guatemala was the home for the rugby matches between the Mexican Ocelotes Rugby Club and Guatemala’s Los Jaguares Rugby Club at El Pensativo stadium, Antigua Guatemala’s official stadium. The match ended in favor the of the visiting Ocelotes, 49 to 20. There were also several games of sevens between the combined teams of Santa Rosa, Guatemala, Antigua, San José María and the Ocelotes. Later on there were other rugby matches by Ocelotes B and Guatemala Rugby Club. The most important aspect of the rugby matches was the comradely among the Mexican and Guatemalan rugby players.
Los rugbiers mexicanos de los Ocelotes estuvieron en Guatemala y el domigo 18 de noviembre se realizaron diversos encuentros en el estadio Pensativo de La Antigua Guatemala. Entre ellos se realizaron varios juegos de sevens de equipos combinados entre clubs de Santa Rosa, Guatemala, Antigua, San José María y los Ocelotes.
El encuentro más esperado era el de las selecciones mayores de los Ocelotes y los Jaguares. El encuentro termino con la victoria de los Ocelotes de 49 a 20, y luego se realizo otro juego de rugby 15 entre los Ocelotes B y Guatemala Rugby Club. Lo más relevante fue la convivencia entre rugbiers mexicanos y guatemaltecos.
El rugby es un deporte nuevo en Guatemala que en 5 años ya ha encontrado muchos adeptos y que seguramente seguirá creciendo. En estos momentos ya cuentan con el apoyo del Comité Olimpico Guatemalteco y están en el proceso de convertirse en una federación.
