Poporopos are Popcorn

As explained before, poporopos is the Guatemalan Spanish word for popcorn. Most other Spanish-speaking countries use palomitas. I believe Guatemala is the only country that uses the word poporopos. Poporopos are also one the staple foods at town fairs.

    I believe in the Salvadorean provinces near the Guatemalan border is also used the word Poporopo. Across Latin America Popcorn is called different names.

    Belice =
    Poporocho
    Bolivia = Pipocas
    Chile = Cabritas
    Colombia
    = Crispetas – Maíz Pira
    Costa Rica = Palomitas de
    maíz
    Ecuador = Canguil
    España = Popcorn – Rosetas –
    Crispetes – Roscas
    El Salvador = Palomitas – Poporopo –
    Rosetas
    Guatemala = Poporopo
    Honduras = Palomitas de maíz –
    Palomas
    México = Palomitas de maíz – Chivitas

    Perú = Cancha – Canchita

    All these spanish names for the same thing reminds me of the song “Qué Dificil Es Hablar El Español” by the Brothers Ospina (Juan Andrés and Nicolas).
