Adobe Façade of Old House

It’s incredible to still find old house in Antigua Guatemala that were built with adobe blocks. I have thought most of these houses were destroyed by the 1976 earthquake. I would let you in one my secrets, I prefer the look of bare naked bricks and adobe than concrete blocks. As a matter of fact, I dislike naked concrete blocks so much that I blame on those blocks the ugliness of present-day rural Guatemala.

What are your feelings about bricks, adobe and concrete blocks?

My feelings about bricks, adobe and blocks are that they provide better shelter than a newspaper. But I dislike the look of blocks too.

I agree with you both, Rudy and NYChapin. Maybe it is because I watched so many Western movies with my father during my childhood, and the scenes with John Wayne or Pedro Infante walking past homes like these stirs up a romantic image of the past? Or maybe it’s just knowing that adobe (and many bricks) are made by HAND, unlike concrete block? I am not sure why, but I like this look very much. Beautiful photo, Rudy !

  Aside: I have several photos from my visits to La Antigua, close-ups of old wooden signs, adobe walls, etc. When my friends here ask me why I took those photos, I have to cite your influence. How dare you stir artistic feelings in your readers, Rudy! Ha-ha-ha!
