Guatemalan Chupetes

Today’s picture is an unusual perspective, perhaps even an original take on the chupetes which are normally photographed like this. Well, you know me, always looking for ways to bring you fresh imagery from Antigua Guatemala.

By the way, do you know what chupete means? Well, the Guatemalan Spanish word “chupete” has several meanings from hard-candy sucker to hickey, going through baby pacifier. In this case, chupete means hard-candy sucker, which was one of the most omnipresent candies in times past, but almost gone now, except for a few chupeteros who keep the tradition alive.

Today, a long-time friend shared with me a trivia about chupetes which were first created around 1200 AC in India where cane sugar was first crystallised. Have a sweet moment next time you visit Guatemala!
