Real Guatemala: The Hard Life of Campesinos

Rudy Giron: AntiguaDailyPhoto.com &emdash; Real Guatemala: Corn Fields

According to Don Alejandro, campesinos walk about a mile or two each day around 6am to 7am to work on their milpas. They do this from April through December. If you have a mule or donkey, the loads are a little easier, but if you are not, you have to carry heave loads up and down the skirt of the volcano. The life of campesinos might be simple, but not easy for sure.

Excelent shot Rudy ! Love the raindrops on the milpa.
In the interest of the series, I suggest you strap on your “Keen or Merrell” hiking boots and accompany the men up to their lots. I’m curious about the sights along the way and views of town from up there. No boots? no problemo, just head over to the mercado and get yourself some “caites”. Be sure to get some with “Pirelli tire soles” they are the best. Happy trails !
