Temple of San Pedro Las Huertas, Antigua Guatemala

As I explained yesterday, I am on a quest to document photographically all the colonial temples in the villages of La Antigua Guatemala. Thus far I have the temples of San Juan del Obispo, San Gaspar Vivar and San Pedro Las Huertas. Soon I will share more images of the other villages with you. Stay tuned!

What kind of temples are they?

    • Catholic. Is that’s what you’re asking?

Yes, I have not heard of Catholic temples. Catholic churches and Catholic cathedrals, yes. I’ve heard of Jewish temples and Buddhist temples, and so on. What is the difference between a Catholic temple and a Catholic church?

        • Well, I guess all semantics and what dictionary you use. In my dictionary, a temple is a building devoted to the worship, or regarded as the dwelling place, of a god or gods or other objects of religious reverence. So in this sense, any building devoted to worship could be a temple regardless of the religion. What do you think?

Primum is right in the sense that Catholics don’t use the word temple often. My understanding is that a temple is a building used for the purpose of worship (any denomination), and a “church” has the connotation of a body of people. To get Cathedral status, the location must contain the seat of a Bishop and also be a major edifice.

          • Thanks Canche for your clarification. This might be a nuance of the English language because in Spanish we use the templo to signify the actual building. Catholics also use many words to refer to the size and importance of the building from ermita, parroquia, iglesia and catedral or hermitage, parrish, church and cathedral to mention the most often used terms in and around Antigua Guatemala. By the way, a quick glance at the entrances on Wikipedia for iglesia show how in Spanish the templo is used, but not in the English version of the word.
