Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Street Portraits of Strangers — Men with Hats

Antigua Guatemala is not only a popular destination for foreigners, but also to locals, Guatemalans pues, such as these two cafetaleros, coffee farmers, from the Departamento de Santa Rosa. Of course, if you visit La Antigua Guatemala, it is must do activity to spend some time at Parque Central, the main square, watching people and their interactions. I guess at some level we’re all voyeurs. Walker Evans has shared this wonderful concept and command.

“Stare. It is the way to educate your eye, and more. Stare, pry, listen eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long.” —Walker Evans

I think the parque is not so much about staring as it is about sharing : sharing the happiness and smiles of people around you, sharing their joy of life, sharing the bench with a stranger and so easily sharing a conversation with anyone. I know the parques in other cities in guate or mexico, but nowhere is it so easy to meet people and nowhere elese people are that open and welcoming…. (…. Oh, have i mentioned how much i love my parque and how many hours i spend there when i am in antigua ;o) lol !!)
