Architecture of Antigua Guatemala — The Cathedral

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Architecture of Antigua Guatemala — The Cathedral

Oh the cathedral building and its ruin complex is such delight for those who love architecture. However, let’s get one thing clear, this is no longer a cathedral as we don’t have a bishop and the entire departamento de Sacatepéquez belongs to the archdiocese of the Catedral de Santiago de Guatemala, located in Guatemala City. That’s right, when the city moved to its new location, back in 1776, the former location of the city of Santiago de Guatemala, now known as La Antigua Guatemala, lost all of its titles or rather, they moved with the city to its new location.

The parroquia de San José occupies parts of what was one of the most splendid cathedral complexes in the American continent.
