Acatenango Volcano Saga by Arturo Godoy

It’s very enjoyable to look at how the condensation concentrates on vegetation on the volcanic slopes. Probably it would have been nicer to have captured this condensation during a golden hour. So, what’s for you the golden hour?

Volcanic colors by Arturo Godoy

If you ever decide to hike the volcanoes around La Anttigua Guatemala, don’t ever forget to pay attention to the colors you find on your way up. The flora up there is unique and enchanting.

I don’t know the name of these purple flowers, can anybody help?

Coffee and Volcanoes by Arturo Godoy

On the road to San Juan del Obispo you can find this view, where you can see
a coffee plantation in the foreground with the Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes in the background. When I was on my way to San Juan del Obispo, I just had to stop and capture this fleeting vista. I am glad I did because now I can share it with you.

About three years ago while doing a job with the terrible weather conditions I was able to capture this sunrise vista which is one of the few photos that saved the trip for me. :)

Fuego Volcano Erupting by Arturo Godoy

How do you think you would feel if you were on top of the Acatenango Volcano and then you watched the Fuego Volcano erupting and making a huge loud noises? I tell you it was loud!!! It was just impressive!!! It’s one of those things that happen a few times in life; something that reminds us on how small we are when we find ourselves on nature’s hands.

The San Francisco Church by Arturo Godoy

A year ago we went to Café Sky to celebrate a friend’s birthday and all of a sudden I glanced to my right and saw the San Francisco El Grande church with the Volcán de Agua nicely lit despite that area was a bit hazy. I wish I knew a little history the San Francisco El Grande church so I could share it with you. Perhaps Rudy or Nelo who actually lived in front of the church can come forward to let us know about the San Francisco El Grande church. ;) Or what about you, what can you share with us?

Chimneys... by Arturo Godoy

Scattered throughout the terra cotta rooftops of La Antigua, keen observers can spy the signature domed chimneys of the traditional Spanish colonial architecture. For me, the chimneys evoke thoughts of a warm hearth filled with crackling firewood. But during this unseasonal rain, I can’t help but to think of Rudy as he asks “Who stole November?” I should go get some firewood for this crazy weather :) I’m missing the warm days :)

Sushi Fridays

Sharing Sushi at Ubi's Sushi by Arturo Godoy

In La Antigua Guatemala we’ve started the tradition to have sushi for lunch on Fridays; it’s Rudy’s fault really since he organized it. The place: Ubi’s Sushi because is quite affordable, and just exquisite. We call them Viernes de sushi.

Bit by bit, the group has grown, and today I found myself amongst graphic designers that also love photograph. It was a great lunch, we talked about movies, music, food, and of course photography. I think Antigua’s Photo Club will also have two new members.

The more the merrier and a larger group to share the passion for photography and the good living. Who knows, these lunches might be the beginning of Antigua’s Epicure Club because as @ienilara declared: Somos sibaritas :)

Giant Kites from Santa María Cauqué

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Kite runner competition by Arturo Godoy

I am still getting over a cold, so I was a bit hesitant to leave home for All Saints Day. However, since a friend reminded me to pick up some fiambre she saved for me, which tasted just like the one my Mom makes. So, anyway, I ended up doing a lot of driving just to pick up the fiambre, which I did as a token for my mom since November 1 is her birthday, also known All Saints Day. When I headed back home I realized some friends were waiting for me to go to Santa María Cauqué, following the recommendation of another friend, a great photographer, Marco Ortíz, who suggested it over other places like Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez where all the crowds go to look at the giant kites.

I had never seen the huge kites so it was no brainer to go to Santa María Cauqué, which has nothing to envy to Santiago Sacatepequez, nor Sumpango kite shows. The experience was amazing; we could walk through the crowd, people were so nice and cordial. I think Santa María Cauqué is under promoted in regards to their giant kites show. Since I was still suffering from a cold, I thought, well, I’m going to get imperfect photos (not that my photos are ever perfect, but I focused in getting them as perfect as possible).

All the joy in keeping this tradition was even reflected when the organizing committee addressed the crowds over the microphone to award the different prices. There were different levels, at least two if I’m not mistaken, the giant kites and the kite runners; those who got their giant kites (at least of a meter in diameter) on the air.

So, what do you think of my imperfect kite photos?

Fuego showing off…

Fuego, erupting_05_800

While some people prefer to make an extra buck, or a lot more extra bucks, here in La Antigua Guatemala some of us try to just live with what nature presents us. So, here is an experiment on a brief time lapse when the Volcán de Fuego erupted on September 14 while I was capturing the gorgeous sunset.

How can some people forget to live life?

Acatenango ahumado by Arturo Godoy

After being away for so long in El Petén, and dealing with a lot of archaeological photography. Anyway, in one of those trips around La Antigua Guatemala, I found myself capturing the above photograph. The light wasn’t that good at that time, but I thought of it as a black and white image and then it worked for me. It’s always a matter of taste, but I do think in this case B/W for landscapes turned out fine. What do you think?

Holy Week Play in Antigua Guatemala

Dialogue between the actors

You think Antigua Guatemala is just processions for the Semana Santa? Wrong. There is more… there are also plays, like this one. This play was being performed parallel to the procession of La Merced this past Sunday.

Can you tell what’s the play all about?

Earth Hour 2010 in Antigua Guatemala

Earth Hour 2010 in Antigua Guatemala

An hour for the Planet…

An hour of no light for the planet; it was celebrated worldwide. Antigua Guatemala did its share, as a city. Some, of course didn’t. Nonetheless the care for our planet should be done 24×7, and not just an hour per year. Of course, I understand all the difficulties of going “green” completely because it also depends on where you are living in the world. However, given all difficulties “going green” full time then perhaps initiatives like this one are a seed of change of conscientiousness.

Antigua Guatemala did its share on a seed of change. Things are getting better; it’s getting better all the time…
