Photo of Halloween in Antigua Guatemala by Nelo Mijangos

Halloween in Antigua Guatemala is becoming increasingly popular, especially at bars and restaurants where often costume contests are held. Calle del Arco is also a popular venue as you can see in the photos below courtesy of Nelo Mijangos. As a matter of fact, it seems that Nelo went to just about every single Halloween party; poor Nelo, it’s incredible how much he suffers in all those parties just to able to share his photos with us.

Typical Guatemalan Breakfast Booth

Everywhere in Guatemala you can find breakfast stalls similar to one shown above where the working class and anybody’s hungry can stop by to get an orange juice or licuado (smoothies) and a pan con pollo (chicken sandwich), or pan with you name it, chiles rellenos, guacamol, frijoles (beans), et cetera. The bread used to prepare the sandwiches is normally pirujo, an elongated French roll, but you can also find pan galleta and pan francés (French roll). Tostadas are usually available at these kind of desayunos on the go.

One interesting trivia is that many workers order their orange juice with raw eggs.

Colorful Guatemalan Fundraising

If you want to do street photography you have to be quick and be ready at all times because you never know when and where the fleeting images will appear.

Yo no me curo así... yo soy Garrick!Case in point is the image above, captured on my way back home while taking an alternate route through San Miguel Escobar. As I was driving up the road, I was surprised to see a whole bunch of colorful clown running on the direction of the mobile PA system, a truck really with several speakers blasting cumbia music. Without really understanding what was going on, I grabbed my camera with a swift move and before I knew, I took just one shot from the car without lowering the windows or anything because that’s all the time I had before the colorful parade and motorcade moved away. Of course, I was not able to get the 30 or so clowns in the frame, but I was satisfied I got enough of them to be representative.

At first I thought it was a convite. Only after looking at the photograph on the computer I was able to see this was a very clever and colorful FUNdraising. I still don’t know what was the fundraising cause, but I am sure it was a success. After I tweaked the photo a little, contrast and sharpness, I realized how much I enjoy the rhythm in this image; it almost feels like everything came into place all at once. I especially like the fraction that entitled “Garrick” and I am showing as a thumbnail here.

What do you think of it? (more…)

Guatemalan Idiosyncrasies: Carwash

Car Wash Sign

In Guatemala we have certain language idiosyncrasies which throw off other Spanish speakers who visit us. One such language idiosyncrasy is Carwash. Even though there are several ways and words to describe a car wash shop, in Guatemala I have only seen the word Carwash, which is embedded in the language of Guatemala that many people do not realized nor do know it is not Spanish. Other such words are brochure, poster, pastartú (mat board), etc.

I am making a to-do list to cover all the Guatemalan idiosyncrasies in the near future. Do you want to help me with the making of the Guatemalan idiosyncrasies to-do list?
