Roof Top and Palo de Izote
Monday, February 28th, 2011Palo de Izote is the Guatemalan equivalent of the Joshua tree. In fact, Palo de Izote is the Mesoamerican cousin of the Joshua or Yucca tree. Like I mentioned before, I have a fascination with the Izote tree; I don’t know why, maybe its many branches that look like arms and hands.
Palo de Izote is used often in the hedgerows around Antigua Guatemala. Its white flowers are edible and they are considered a delicacy. The izote tree flower is also the national flower for the neighboring country of El Salvador.
Santo Domingo Del Cerro
Thursday, January 27th, 2011So close and so far away, that’s how I feel regarding this rolling hill, so close to La Antigua Guatemala, yet I have not made the time to explore and photograph. I promise I will do my best to bring you an exclusive coverage of the things to do in Santo Domingo del Cerro.
Do you know what’s up there and what things you can do in Santo Domingo del Cerro?
Catedral & Palacio de Los Capitanes
Friday, January 21st, 2011In our never-ending quest to bring you rare or unusual vistas from the same hackneyed places, today I present you an example of a new perspective for the overly-exposed Catedral de San José, quite possibly Antigua Guatemala’s most often photographed church, since it’s located in the Main Plaza.
Have you ever seen a photo from this perspective?
Spanish Tiles Roofs
Sunday, January 16th, 2011I am sure I am not the only one who enjoys looking at the repetition and texture created by the terra-cotta Spanish tile roofs. Even when the tiles are old and weathered, they still look great.
Nowadays, however, most Spanish tiles roof, tejas in Spanish, are ornamental since they are place above modern roofs.
Chimneys
Sunday, November 28th, 2010Scattered throughout the terra cotta rooftops of La Antigua, keen observers can spy the signature domed chimneys of the traditional Spanish colonial architecture. For me, the chimneys evoke thoughts of a warm hearth filled with crackling firewood. But during this unseasonal rain, I can’t help but to think of Rudy as he asks “Who stole November?” I should go get some firewood for this crazy weather

Spanish Tile Roof Texture
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010I love textures and La Antigua Guatemala seems to possess an endless amount of textures. Perhaps the fact that I am a graphic designer is what makes me focus on textures.
Now the texture, repetition, waves, color and perspective found on the roof tops of La Antigua Guatemala are simply delightful, at least they’re to me. I am sure I am not the only one. Those of you who feel the same, please come forth!
Can you guess what this is?
Friday, June 20th, 2008Repairing the Spanish-tile Roofs
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008With the first rains of the season, you also begin to see the handymen on the roofs of La Antigua Guatemala. I like the movement of this photo and how the handyman is sort of like walking the line. Even though, there is nothing in about 85% of the image above, I like it. Negative space is important too.
What do you think?
