School Supplies for the New School Year

As I have mentioned before, bookstores and stationary stores are jam-packed around this time of the year in Guatemala since the new school year is about to begin. Yes, that is right, you read correctly, the Guatemalan school year begins around the mid January and ends sometime in October.

Boys and girls are been given their school supplies lists and they need to get them before the first day of classes.

Public schools are free in Guatemala, except for some administrative fees. But, everything else parents need for school is not free, unless you get a beca (scholarship) or are given to you by a NGO (non-profit group); families need to buy a every single pencil and sheet of paper as well as any book or notebook, cuaderno in Spanish.

Here we see the schools supplies the were given away by the NGO Camino Seguro (I believe, but I am not sure).
