Why is Belly Dancing So Popular in Antigua Guatemala

Who can explain to me why belly dancing is so popular in Antigua Guatemala. I have seen belly dancers in many activities and events in Antigua Guatemala, but I don’t know how something so foreign can be so embedded in the traditions of Antigüeños. What’s your take on it?

…Maybe because it’s the only kind of sensual dance that latinos didn’t invent? Ja-ja-ja, just kidding. I read somewhere that this type of dance originated with the Roma people, or “Gypsies”, of Europe. However, since you never fail to come up with the Guatemala connection to just about everything, Rudy, it wouldn’t surprise me if bellydancing had it’s origins in the land of eternal spring, somehow…. 😉

I never would have imagined belly-dancing was popular in Antigua! Has this been the case for long? How it got there; that’s a mystery…..why it is popular; well, that’s a little more obvious!
