Los Patojos Need Your Help
Contact Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes or Gary Jepson to learn how you can help Los Patojos. In the meantime, read about what Asociación Los Patojos is doing to help the little ones and not so little.
Los Patojos was created to give hope and dignity to the children and youth of Jocotenango, Guatemala.
During the past seven years we have altered the history of our town. Instead of following the path of crime, early pregnancy, drug addiction and violence, our youth are proud young leaders who are expanding their abilities, hopes and dreams through our alternative form of education.
Our strategy is working because we have created a space where young people can leave behind their individual problems and participate in creating a new future. We create this change by engaging them in fine arts, journalism, ballet, break dancing, photography and theatre. Through these activities their self confidence, their pride and their hope for a better future grows incredibly.
Give Kids A Chance of Canada has worked in Jocotenango for over nine years. They recognized our unique approach and have partnered with us for over five years. In 2012, with funding from Give Kids A Chance, we were able to purchase land to build our own centre which is desperately needed as we are severely lacking in sufficient space for our ever expanding numbers of children. Give Kids A Chance also raised sufficient funds for Phase 1, the educational and nutritional dining centre. Construction is in progress and going very well.
Los Patojos now needs assistance to construct Phase 2 which is the Salon de Multiple Usos (SUM) for the youth program. This section of the building will be where the youth festivals and events will take place as well as the classrooms.
We are looking for individuals and companies to partner with us to complete this centre so that the children and youth of Jocotenango can continue developing the life skills necessary to ensure they will be proud young men and women who pass on their skills to others. These young adults can and will change the future of our town.
