Buying banana leaves for tamales

Almost eight years ago I set out to bring you images of the daily life in and around Antigua Guatemala and for the most part I have stayed true and honest to the goal. Today’s photograph adds to the #RealGuatemala series I started a few months back and it is an excellent image of daily life that many visitors might not get to see or understand; especially so if they have had tamales yet.

Last night I ate a Guatemalan tamale.
By the way, I am in Hayward California but there is a Guatemalan lady in a neighboring city whose tamales are the closest to the real thing. Next week I will be able to eat an authentic Guatemalan tamale in La Antigua Guatemala and be able to tell if the tamales I eat in California are really chapines.

It’s been too long ago for me! My mother-in-law came to stay with us in the UK and running up to Christmas time, we made a lot for the holidays; about 50! We made a family production line, each of the children adding one ingredient and I did the tying at the end. A great thing for families to do together and it left very wonderful memories for that particular Christmas. Bought the hoja de platano in London.

Oh, the last time was when my Guatemalan friend made some for the New Year. So delicious! But just seeing the image of these ladies makes me hungry, Rudy. They will be back around in a couple of hours carrying a large basket full of edible goodies on their heads, won’t they ? iAy, Guatelinda! Te extrano mucho… 😉
