The World-Famous Convite Dances of Ciudad Vieja
This is a centuries old play written by a Franciscan friar as a warning for those who make the wrong choices in life. The convite dances of Ciudad Vieja are at least a century old tradition and the Dance of the 24 Devils have been declared part of Guatemala’s intangible cultural heritage. Convite can be translated as an invitation to join the dances and festivities to honor the the Immaculate Virgin of Conception
The convites are realized between the 7th and 15th of December in Ciudad Vieja and surrounding communities such as San Miguel Escobar and San Pedro Las Huertas. Watch the video clips below to get a feel for the convites.
And here’s a longer video clip of the convite dances.
