Holding Up the Heavens

Sosteniendo el cielo

Cielo is the Spanish word for heaven and sky. Cielo is also the word used for the ceiling, normally referred as cielo falso (false heaven). So this beam is holding up the heavens, if you can “think” in Spanish or Sosteniendo el cielo.

The question is, how can something as mundane as a wooden beam can produce pleasure to look at, enjoyment at the touch, happiness at its humid-old-wooden smell?

I don’t know, but I am sure the combination of simple commonplace things like lamps, poles, beams, tiles, cobblestones, arches, et-cetera make a visit to La Antigua Guatemala an enchanting and magical experience.

What is your take on it?
