All Roads Lead to Antigua Guatemala

Often I have mentioned the importance of Antigua Guatemala, formerly Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, through out the history of the Central American isthmus and beyond. For instance, Antigua Guatemala had the fourth university in the American continent. The California avocado mother seeds came from Antigua Guatemala. The black Christ effigy of Esquipulas was carved in Antigua Guatemala. Some claimed that The Little Prince was inspired and perhaps written in Antigua Guatemala.

I could go on and on, but suffice to say that Antigua Guatemala plays center stage often as it is the case now with the 43rd General Assembly of the Organization of the American States, OAS, being held in La Antigua Guatemala.

Rudy, thanks for the connection between Saint-Exupéry and Antigua. Having studied The Little Prince in both French and English in my university days, I never knew of his stay in Antigua while recuperating from a serious airplane accident. From what I’ve now read, the proposition that the city of roses could have been Antoine’s inspiration or muse is most interesting. Are Baobabs really Ceibas? Are the volcanos he references Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango? Great food for thought!

The answer can be found on 5ta Calle Oriente, numero 5, CIRMA. A number of studies conducted under the project ” Porque Estamos Como Estamos” explain it all. We can beat around the bush all we want, but a big part of the answer has to do with the institutionalized discrimination towards indigenous people in Guate.
