Antigua Architecture Walks

Rudy Giron: Antigua Architecture Walks &emdash; Arquitecto José María Magaña explicando los detalles de la fachada de las ruinas de El Carmen

I was fortunate to accompany Guatemalan Architect José María Magaña Juárez, who specializes in conservation of monuments and historic centers and was Antigua Guatemala Conservator from 1979 through 1986, and other architecture enthusiasts through a architecture walk through the three different periods Magaña has been able to identify: Renaissance, Transition and Baroque.

According to Architect Magaña Juárez, the idea is to offer a different perception about the monumental architecture and its typological evolution which is rarely known, based on recent field research.

Those present in the Antigua architecture walk had the opportunity to learn the similarities, differences and evolution of the architecture of Antigua Guatemala through the evidence found in the ruins of San Agustín, Santa Teresa de Jesús and El Carmen; that’s a period between 1543 and 1773.

Architect JM Magaña Juárez will offer this Antigua architecture walks on Thursdays and Saturdays starting at 10am. You can get in touch with him to reserve a space through his email or call him at (502) 7832-4124.

Here is a slide show of some of the other photographs I captured. Enjoy!
