Stucco Siren Architectonic Detail

This stucco siren is found on the top relief found in the building right across the cathedral on 5a calle oriente. Even though nowadays this building is divided into separate properties, the architectonic details continue along the different properties so easy to determine this was just one property at one point.

Does anybody know why sirens were so popular during colonial times?

Category and Organization Aside: I believe architectonic details should be its own category and because I am sure I have many entries on the theme already, I should create the classification. Now, I just have to back to the archives to classify to previous entries.
