LA style tacos and burritos now available in Antigua Guatemala

That’s right, finally we have Los Angeles style tacos and burritos available in La Antigua Guatemala at California Tacos, right across from La Merced.

If you spend enough time with me, you’ll hear me complain about the poor quality of Mexican food available in Guatemala. There’s plenty of Tex Mex food or let’s call it inspired. Recently, I came across a comedor serving Tapachula inspired Mexican food. We have Taco Bell in Guatemala City and now in San Lucas, but I don’t know what that is. Mexican food, per se, not really.

What bothers me the most is the tacos. How come we can’t find decent tacos in Guatemala, I mean, you can’t get any simpler than tacos; a tortilla base, some soft and juicy meat, chopped cilantro and onions topped with whatever salsa you like, right? That’s it, yet tacos in Guatemalan don’t taste like Mexican food. What gives?

This afternoon, though, I have some California style tacos and burritos with a choice of chicken, steak, fish and shrimp; which in my book is as close to Mexican food as you can get. Well, some people would argue burritos are not Mexican food, yet I had burritos and chimichangas in northern Mexico; heck even as far south as San Luis Potosí.

What better name for these delicious food than California Tacos, right? They even have an all you can eat tacos special.

So, if you are craving Mexican tacos, head north to 1a calle and right across from Iglesia La Merced you will find California Tacos, a hole in the wall with an endless supply of tacos. ¡Buen provecho!
