Volcán Fuego is such a show off

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Volcán Fuego is such a show off

Here’s a photograph of Volcán Fuego latest large eruptions on Friday and Saturday. As many of you know, volcano Fuego, the active volcano located southwest of Antigua Guatemala, is constantly active with minor eruptions throughout the day. Often enough, though, Fuego goes into show off mode, sending lava and ash high up into the sky. That’s when Fuego is spotlighted on the news as if it was going into eruption for the first time.

If you want to take a photographic tour of the many volcanic eruptions of volcán Fuego through the years, follow the white rabbit through the archives of Antigua Daily Photo. Enjoy!

A year ago, I remember staying at the hotel La Casona and remaining awake all night. At one point I went up to the roof terrace and saw Fuego popping lava. I could not see the smoke until morning light. With a distant rumbling and bright orange lava flows, it was a magical and powerful experience. Despite having seen it before (and other volcanoes too), it filled me with awe and excitement for the power of nature and its randomness. Beauty can be savage.

    • Wow Canche, how a poetic your caption. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful to see but frightening at the same time. Fuego as seen from roof of Muni in 2007.
    Missed meeting Rudy that time.
