Mermaids Fountain with Flowers

Mermaids Fountain with Flowers by Rudy Girón

Cool and peaceful are the afternoons in Central Park nowadays, except for the murmurs of the mermaids and the people enjoying the contact with friends, family and visitors from abroad.

Elsewhere, in the other side of the world, a ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan’s eastern coast Friday. Our best wishes for a prompt recovery.

  1. I agree with the other blogger’s comment…you really do feel the warmth and the spirit of the people. For the past 4 years I’ve followed your blog Rudy and I just want to say what you’ve done with it is amazing. My two daughters (Guatemaltecas 4 and 6 yrs) also love viewing your photos and reading about La Antigua. Have a great weekend Rudy and yes, our thoughts are with those who’ve incurred the wrath of this tsunami. Best from the Midwest USA.

  2. I have spent a lot of time in Central Park over the years, sitting near the lactating mermaids. I was once told about a legend explaining it’s interesting beauty. There was a lady who took in several orphans in Antigua. She nurtured them for many years and was highly regarded, almost as a Saint. The lactating murmaids are to represent her nurturing several Guatemala children. Maybe it’s a legend, or maybe there is truth to it. I don’t know, but I like it as I sit and watch Guatemalan woman walk by with their children straped onto them with colourful cloth. Shéri
