Not Your Typical Guatemalan Granizadas

Rudy Giron: AntiguaDailyPhoto.com &emdash; Baroque Guatemalan Ice-Shaving Granizadas

As I mentioned before, Granizada is the Guatemalan Spanish word for shaved ice snacks. Basically, you take shaved or crushed ice and add any combination of the following: syrups, fruits, condensed milk, cooked fruits and their syrups, tamarind, camote (sweet potatoes), nance (sweet yellow cherry), just to name a few of the possible ingredients for the sweet granizadas; you add pepitoria molida (ground pumpkin seeds), salt and lime-lemon juice for the salty granizadas. Now, this guy has the most out of this world granizadas. He has a michelada granizada with 10 ingredients which I don’t know if to put it on foods or desserts. He also told me that he sells lots of café and chocolate granizadas. He told me he has two carts, one near the plazuela La Concepción and another inside the San Francisco El Grande church complex.

Let’s help fund this new Guatemalan documentary: Tomorrow I am skipping lunch and coffee to help fund Luis Argueta and Bea Gallardo’s new documentary project “Abuelos y Nietos Juntos: Two Generations Together” because as Luis puts it, every dollar counts. How about you, can you skip lunch or coffee for a day?
