The Butterfly Makers

We continue with our entrepreneurial series with the metal artisans in San Gaspar Vivar. At this shop the blacksmiths and artisans make all kinds of metal handicrafts such as chandeliers, metal wall decorations, butterflies, candleholders, and a long list of etceteras.

As you have seen thus far, the villages of Antigua Guatemala are hot beds for small businesses enterprises. I can assure you that I have not even touch the surface this week. I could probably profile a different entrepreneur each day for a year or so.

….I often wonder why people don’t sell more hand-made things around Antigua instead of everyone selling the same stuff in the Streets and in the Stores… I am sure many people wouldn’t mind to pay some more money for genuine hand-made, unique and beautiful things, be it handwoven scarfs and other textiles, jewelery, high quality leather bags ( I have found my store in the back of the Artesanias market that makes high quality leather bags with huipiles, wether I buy the huipiles from women during my tours or from this store and yes of course they are more expensive than the regular tourist bags with about 700-1300Q, but sooo many people here in Europe asked me where I got those beautiful bags and they are absolutely unique since they are handmade to my exact order and wishes), wood carvings, paintings of whatever. Sometimes on Sundays they have a little market with stands in front of the Palacio de los Capitanes and those things are also fair trade and help the people who make them. They sell such beautiful things like necklaces made from recylced paper or in November I bought the most cute x-mas décorations and snowmen… I wish they would create more unique things and have this little market there on a regular basis every week on Saturdays and Sundays….
