Real Guatemala: The Acolytes

Rudy Giron: Instagrams &emdash; Los acólitos

We continue the Real Guatemala series with some Spanish words for your ever-increasing Spanish vocabulary. First acólitos, that’s the closes translation for acolytes, although the most often used word is quite possibly monaguillos for alta boys. The interesting thing about the photograph is that I see two girls and I thought altar boys were always boys. What do you think?

I am enjoying the real Guatemala series; you often don’t get to the real life part, because the focus is always on something extraordinary and La Antigua Guatemala is also full of the extraordinary. By the way, the altar boys are Monaguillos with a “u”, right?

I a monaguillo at my local church in Guatemala City Zona 5 about 45 years ago but we were not called monaguillos we were called acolitos.
