Guatemalan Moonshine Sampler Anyone, Anyone?

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Octavos of Agua Ardiende from Guatemala

Here’s your illustrated Guatemalan Spanish word of the day: Agua ardiente for hard liquor or moonshine.

The typical bottle of agua ardiente, literal burning water or moonshine, is an octavo, an eighth of a bottle. The most popular brand is Quetzalteca Especial, which in recent years decided to sell their agua ardiente with additional flavors such as jaimaca, tamarindo, horchata, etc. as well. Venado comes close second in popularity. Interesting enough, I didn’t see Quetzalteca in this display of agua ardiente.

A set like this would make many Guatemalans very happy this Black Friday or for Christmas. Keep that in mind. 😉
