Canto por los Derechos Humanos Concert in La Antigua Guatemala

The poster above is about a concert promoting the Human Rights in Guatemala. The concert was held in La Antigua Guatemala’s Central Park and the listed bands were Radio Viejo, Unicornio, Yoyito, Caja Lúdica, Amigos de la Marimba de San Pedro Carchá.

Human Rights are not respected nor enforced in Guatemala. From babies, women, man and everybody really, their human rights are violated often, if not daily.

I believe that the Procurador de los Derechos Humanos in Guatemala should be holding these sort of concerts and awareness campaigns at the police stations, at the adoption lawyers union, at any kind of lawyers associations, in courts, and in congress, just to name a few of the places where human rights are violated the most.

What is your view on the subject of Human Rights in Guatemala?

On a recent post I described the schizophrenic attitude towards human rights Guatemalan people have. It is often heard that Human Rights are just there to defend criminals, which in any other place would sound like a contradiction, but apparently not in Guate.
On my godmotherland I am bombarded for just causes and events like this and it had made me wonder “what for?”. I am becoming cynic on my old age I guess.

I have been informed or perhaps given a hint (or several) that as someone who only lived part of her childhood in Guatemala, I am not permitted to state my views in regards to human rights in said country. Let me rephrase that, perhaps I could state my views, but these are not welcomed or shall we say appreciated? After all, I am talking from the outside looking in. I’ve received this kind of reaction by family members, friends, and acquaintances. I find this reaction says more about them than anything else. I now understand the term “la memoria del silencio.” It seems that things are supposed to disappear if they are not talked about. As someone who witnessed tragic events in her childhood I dislike the implicit message of silence I receive, but then again, I understand one ruffles more than a few feathers when one speaks of any country’s track record on human rights (more so if this country is in conflict with its own history).
