The Empty Football Fields Around Antigua Guatemala

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Rainy Season Vista: The Football Field

Today’s the day. And it’s going to happen, again and again. It has to happen. Nice day.

If you don’t know why most football fields around Antigua Guatemala are empty and will be empty for the next 30 days or so you are living under a rock or in a country where football means something else than the most beautiful sport of all. You know what I mean, right?

By the way, who are you rooting for?

I have to be completely honest with you guys. I do not follow or watch any sports, except for some games of the World Cup every four years; how about you?

  1. Well Rudy, here is a shot of a similar soccer field from the 60’s. I found it in a cycling blog by the name of “Cycling inquisition” under the title “The Vuelta a Guatemala: A case study of differently different we are.”
The field looks familiar, any chance it was taken in Antigua? it looks to small to be the national stadium.
Work your magic and found out.

You can see the slope of the volcano in the background.

      • @NYChapin, you are correct it is the Estadio Pensativo. On my recent trip to La Antigua Guatemala I went to watch a soccer match and I remember seeing the steps on both sides of the entrance. In fact the entrance is still in similar shape, it has not changed that much. Even the sliding gate still exists. The only thing that was added was large bowl for a torch on top of the middle column above the entrance just to the left of those guys standing on top of the wall (upper right corner on the photo) and I believe the house on the backgroung is gone (I think there is a green area there now). And you are also correct we see the slopes of the Volcan de Agua.
