Día del Cariño / Day of Affection in Antigua Guatemala
Cariño is a very versatile Spanish word; it can mean honey as ven cariño, come here, honey, or sweetie and darling; it can also be used as tenderness [dilo con cariño]. Cariño can also mean love, dear, and affection, as in Día del Cariño or Day of Affection, which is I believe it is the best translation for February 14 in Guatemala, as opposed to simply Valentine’s Day. Día del cariño is the day to show your love and care for everyone else, from friends to family and love ones.
Here I captured a couple of friends embracing for Día del Cariño and the now famous Fofo, who appeared on this website for the first time back in 2008 on the post I am Fofo. Fofo or Rodolfo de León is a Guatemalan artist whom I met many years ago. Through the years I have captured him infraganti several times. Today’s is my most recent portrait of him and a good picture to share for Día del cariño. Below I shared with you a little more about Fofo and Larraitz, the embracing girl on the foreground.
It is so good to have friends who are artists; they keep you cultivated and entertained. Such is the case of Rodolfo de León, alias “Fofo” to his friends, whom I met many years ago. Along those years, I have witnessed many of his artistic manifestations; always something new and fresh.
This season, Fofo and his girlfriend Larraitz Iparragirre have put together a body puppet show with a set of characters that are amazing. By just using their hands, feet and knees plus a harmonious wardrobe, they were able to create a body puppets performance which is innovative, stimulating and fun.
