In Guatemala, turrón or meringue is the word for well-beaten egg whites and sugar. Now, what’s the difference between merengue and meringue? Well, In Spanish, merengue can be the egg whites candy put on cakes or eaten by itself, which is very close to the French and English word meringue. Furthermore, the merengue is used to identify a Caribbean style of dance music, which is very popular in Central America.

As I have said before, these subtle differences in the Spanish language are reason enough for taking Spanish Lessons in Antigua Guatemala; how else can one asks about these subtleties.
