Consecutive Day 3635 — Mayan Pizza

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Guatemalan Food — Mayan Pizza

Here’s your illustrated Guatemalan Spanish word of the day: Pupusas for cornmeal cakes or pizzas.

Pupusa is a name inherited from El Salvador to a dish that can be found through Central America, Mexico, under various names. Pupusas are “normally” about the size of compact disc and they are made from a mixture of cornmeal dough, cheese, and whatever ingredients are available. This giant pupusa, however, is about four to five times the “normal” size; thus the Mayan pizza name. These giant pupusas are way over a pound and they have four ingredients and costs about Q40 ($5). This is Guatemalan “fast” food, if you know what I mean.
