Sunday Morning Strolls Through The Alamedas of Antigua Guatemala

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Alameda El Calvario in Antigua Guatemala

Here’s your illustrated Spanish word of the day: Alameda for a tree-lined street.

La Antigua Guatemala has three official alamedas dating back to its founding back in 1543. These official alamedas are El Calvario, Santa Lucía and Santa Rosa. There’s a pseudo alameda at the end of 5a avenida sur, near Vivero La Escalonia, but it hasn’t been recognised as one.

Sunday mornings are a great time to go out for a stroll through the alamedas as the light is beautiful, there are not too many people or cars on the streets. It’s so refreshing to breath in the chilli and crisp air of the Winter season and enjoy the beauty and quality of the morning sunshine. Of course, you can do this every day, but on Sunday mornings there’s even fewer people on the streets. Give it a try next time you can, you will not regret it.
