Mayan Organic and Ecological Packaging for Ricotta Cheese

Here’s your illustrated Guatemalan word of the day: Requesón for Ricotta cheese.

A few weeks ago, I shared a post on FB that talked about the practice of using banana leaves as an ecological and organic packaging alternative to plastic. I mentioned that many Mayan vendors in Guatemala have been using leaves as packaging for long time. In fact, banana leaves are quite common to wrap cheeses and other foods such as delicious pre-Columbian curry known as patin.

Requesón or ricotta cheese is sold often in the mercados wrapped with banana leaves as you can see below.
