Rudy Giron: AntiguaDailyPhoto.com &emdash; High Key of La Merced Church

Another series that I am working on is all the ruins, churches and landmarks of Antigua Guatemala taken at night and in black and white. In this case, I chose to make a high key of Iglesia de la Merced to really make it stand out against the darkness of the night.

What do you think of it?

I am also experimenting on creating three dimensional panoramic pictures like the one shown below. I am not quite there yet, but if you would like to see my experiments, follow the white rabbit.

Rudy Giron: 121212 Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe &emdash;

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe in Antigua Guatemala

As I have shared with you in previous years, in La Antigua Guatemala, religious celebrations draw together all kinds of heterogeneous people and the Feast of Our Lady of Virgen de Guadalupe is no exception. On December 12 celebrations of La Virgen de Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe, you can find gringa moms, indigenous mamás, ladino madres and white mamás all taking their children dressed with indigenous clothes to visit the altar of La Virgen Morena.

By the way, we continue with the countdown for the end of the world as we know it in less than two weeks. Let the Maya be wrong with their math and calculations for once. :-(

Aerial View of Iglesia de la Merced by Nelo Mijangos

Just last week I was talking about bringing you new perspectives and freshness to the excessively photographed Antigua Guatemala and to the end I began a series of black and white photographs of the most emblematic churches in and around Antigua Guatemala taken at night. Yesterday, we began a new trip with aerial views of La Antigua Guatemala thanks to the kindness of Nelo Mijangos who is sharing his unique perspective from the air.

Last week was an example of a new flavour for the overly-exposed Iglesia de La Merced, quite possibly Antigua Guatemala’s most photographed church. Here are other angles of La Merced church: the façade, the dome, the atrium, the main doorway, the baroque details of Iglesia de La Merced. I have tried not to show you the most obvious places and the most often photographed sites unless I can bring a new fresh vista or a different angle.

Iglesia de la Merced in Black and White by Rudy Giron

Since one of the goals of AntiguaDailyPhoto is to bring you new fresh vistas from the same hackneyed places I have decided to do a series of black and white photographs of the most emblematic churches in and around Antigua Guatemala. Today’s is an example of a new perspective for the overly-exposed Iglesia de La Merced, quite possibly Antigua Guatemala’s most photographed church.

Even I have already shown you the façade, the dome, the atrium, the main doorway, the baroque details of Iglesia de La Merced. I have tried not to show you the most obvious places and the most often photographed sites unless I can bring a new fresh vista or a different angle. Remember, this is not a tourist-oriented site (well, at least I try not to make it one).

Have I succeeded, please, let me know your thoughts?

Antigua Guatemala Panoramic Vista

Antigua Guatemala Panoramic Vista

Here’s yet another vista from Iglesia de La Merced, one of the most important churches in La Antigua Guatemala, if not the most important. As always follow the white rabbit to take a look at all the different vistas from Iglesia de La Merced.

Ephemerides Aside: In Guatemala, October 12 is a national holiday known as Día de la Raza or Day of the Race. October 12 is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in the Americas, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various countries since the early 20th century. SEE MORE

If you want to have a laugh, read The War of the Worlds, a humorous parody based on the original “The War of the Worlds” (October 30, 1938) radio show The Mercury Theatre on the Air as it was broadcasted. On a date like today’s, in 1492, Two Worlds Collided and the rest is, as we say, living history!

Weather Aside: Any protests or celebration of October 12 were marred by a tropical depression which brought heavy and constants rains which in turn caused landslides and overflowing of rivers. That’s the reason for now showing an Oct. 12 related photograph. (more…)

What's Inside This Doorway

What’s inside this passageway?

  1. The largest fountain in Central America
  2. Ruins of a monastery
  3. Mayan arches used in colonial architecture
  4. Access to the rooftop of La Merced Church
  5. All of the above
  6. None of the above

Please, help us determined what’s inside the passageway by sharing your answers in the comments area.

Like many firsts of the month, AntiguaDailyPhoto is participating in the theme day of the City Daily Photo community around the world. To see how others in the City Daily Photo community have interpreted today’s theme please click here to view thumbnails for all participants around the planet.

Front View of Iglesia de La Merced

Even though I have shown quite a few photos of Iglesia de La Merced, I believe this is the first time I actually show you the entire front façade of La Merced church. Oops, sorry! I guess my approach is to skip the obvious shots at first and to share with you less common angles or perspectives. Over one year and half had past before I published the first photo of Calle del Arco. I hope you don’t mind seeing other parts of town or perspectives first. ;-)
