Selling Paintings on the Streets of Antigua

It is not unusual to find people selling handicrafts, furniture, orchids, telephones, pens and pencils and anything really; so it comes as no surprise to see an indigenous woman selling paintings with La Antigua Guatemala motifs.

These costumbrismo paintings are done by local painters sitting on small stool right on the streets.

I am sure one day I will find one of my photos as a painting… I know for a fact that’s already happened since a couple of artists from abroad asked permission to use them as reference.

Now, here’s a little surprise I am going to let you in… beginning next Monday, I too will be selling my photos through this site. You will be able to order very affordable signed (or not) 4″x6″, 8″x10″ and 11″x14″ prints in color, black and white or sepia on glossy, matte, luster or metallic paper of any photo available at La Antigua Guatemala Daily Photo. I remember heading to Lago Atitlan on a bus, coming around a tight bend where someone was selling paintings just off the side of the road of the view looking out over Panajachel. We were doing about 80 mph so I couldn’t stop to buy one, but I wish I had.
What a good idea to sell prints of your gorgeous photos! I want to hang them on every wall of my house.

I have 2 such paintings (though not so quite as large as hers) hanging in my living room tonight and looking at them makes me feel very homsick for Antigua….

Oh I wish I had seen paintings being sold on the street. They are stunning. When we were in GC at the Westin, the Westin did have a beautiful painting of a mother and baby – I am so regretful I did not buy it.

I am a sucker for a really nice painting of a new city that I am visiting. I find that paintings (of course photography as well) really capture the essence behind a particular place in such a different way. While I buy them of a smaller size, I have paintings from Granada, Madrid, Salamanca (Spain) and Playa del Carmen (Mexico) — I have since framed them all and put them in my apartment. For me, they say so much more than the typical, every-day postcard. You really capture the Antigueno way-of-life as well through your photography, so keep up the great picture-taking!

Ahhh.. the beautiful paintings! Does anyone know if (and I highly doubt it) anyone of these artisans sell the paintings online? It’s doubtful that I will be back in Guate for a while but I am dying for a nice big (well done) painting of Antigua.
