Testing the Roller Coaster for the Santiago de Guatemala Fair

Rudy Giron: Antigua Guatemala &emdash; Building a Roller Coaster for the Santiago Fair

Here’s your Guatemalan Spanish word of the day: “Montaña rusa” or roller coaster, although it literally means Russian Mountain.

Even though the Fiestas de Santiago, Antigua Guatemala’s town fair festivities are held on July 25, the mechanical games and booths are build ahead of time. The Antigua Guatemala’s Saint James festivities are held through out the colonial town, but the actual fair and games are build on La Polvora field behind the market. If you are in town now, you can stop by to see the progress of the building of the mechanical games and booths. If on the other hand, you would like to visit a town fair right now, head over to San Pedro Las Huertas and San Pedro El Panorama villages which are observing the town fairs this weekend the the next.
