Green Mango for MO

Guatemalan Green Mango Serving

Boy, do I sacrifice for you guys, or what? MO (Mario) asked for a shot of green mangoes and here I am going to buy a green mango with pepitoria, sal, limón y chile, just for him (and Raquel). 😉

See, many of the snacks in the Guatemalan junk food menu are actually healthy. Many street vendors set up shop outside schools to sell their junk food to kids and this include fruit portions sold inside a little plastic bag. The fruit sold varies by season, but can be green mangoes, green apples, jocotes (Guatemalan yellow plums), oranges, watermelons, melons, pineapple, just to name a few of the options. One more thing, green means unripe fruit which is normally served along lemon juice, salt, ground ayote (pumpkin) seeds known as pepitoria, and ground red hot chili pepers (not the band). 😉

  1. Rudy, You are the best dude!!! Thank you so much. Just looking at the picture makes my mouth water. As I close my eyes I imagine paying for the mango and taking the bag from the little girl. I imagined walking to a nice shady spot and sitting down with my green mango in a bag, shaking the bag to mix all the ingredients and picking the biggest hearty piece and placing in my mouth. Mmmm, mmm, mmm Yummy. When all the green mango pieces are gone….time to grab the bag by one of it’s corners and slurp up all the juice. Can’t let any of it go to waste.

    Muchas gracias Rudy.

Gracias Rudy! I agree with MO, you rock and it looks so good it’s making my mouth water…I can almost taste it. Best snack in the whole world – especially on a sunny day.
…now if only I could figure out how to make a mango tree grow in Canada…They’re just not the same from the supermarket!

  3. Qué rico!!!

Mmmmm how I miss mangos verdes! I guess I could prepare them here, but there is something to the flavor of mangos bought on the street. Maybe it is the plastic bag, or the thrill of maybe getting sick, or simply the fact that these vendors are the experts. Thanks for posting the pic.

  4. Rudy, you don’t know this but people call me Mo as well… so in the event that I am one of the biggest fans of Green Mango since I was a very young child, I will take this pictures as mine as well…

Hope you had a good weekend!

  5. OMG! Thanks for posting this pic… this took me back to my childhood in Retalhuleu. My sister and I didn’t have much money but we’d find a “choca” (a quarter) once in a while and we’d get a green mango with all the great fixens!

My family brings pepitoria and chile coban whenever they visit GUA so when mango season comes around to South Florida, I prepare the green mangos in zipploc bags for my hubby and son! LOL :o)

    Thanks again!
    Leslie :o)
