Marimba Days in Antigua Guatemala

Marimba Days in Antigua Guatemala by Rudy Giron - www.rudygiron.com

Most weekends in Antigua Guatemala are marimba days. There are quite a few places, private and public, where one can listen to live marimba music. In this particular case, the marimba players were providing the soundtrack for the weekend temporary handicraft market that set up over the weekend on the atrium of the former Compañía de Jesús building, now the headquarter for the Cooperación Española.

Do you like marimba music? I ask because I don’t and only listen to it when there is no choice like in this particular case.

I never get tired of urging you to visit Guatemala during the dry season. The weather is the best, the light is magical and there are so many celebrations, the best celebrations in my opinion, such as Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, Thanksgiving, Burning of the Devil, Posadas, Christmas, New Year’s, Día de Reyes, Carnival, and some years even the world-famous Holy Week of Antigua Guatemala.

This photo is a typical portrait of the weather during the dry season. What are you waiting for? Book your next flight to Antigua Guatemala right now, don’t wait any longer…

Last Friday night was magical with melodic and enchanting music performed by musicians Ishto Juevez and Ixtapoch Vallenas inside the gardens of the Compañía de Jesús Building in Antigua Guatemala. The weather and temperatures were just perfect, the night was lit by a full moon and the musicians by colourful spotlights that not only highlighted the musicians but also the amazing venue that is the Cooperación Española. Below I share with you some of Ishto Juevez music and video clip for one of his most popular songs and a photo gallery of the night. Enjoy!

Rain Threads

Even though it is difficult to see, these rain threads are an actual record of heavy rains. Boy oh boy, when it rains in Guatemala it really pours. Sometimes it feels like a lake was just pour over La Antigua Guatemala in less than hour.

Anyway, here’s a simple image showing a downpour at the Antigua Compañía de Jesús or the former Company of Jesus monastery. I hope you like it.

Gran Courtyards of Espacioce!

EspacioCE 1

The entire property of Espacioce! or the Centro de Cooperación de la Formación Española is impressive. Yet, many never venture beyond the ruins outside to discover the impressive rows of arches that enclose a grand expanse of manicured lawn inside the Compañía de Jesús building. The first courtyard is centered around a typical Antigueño fountain that sits amid a sea of bright green grass. Rest on the benches to enjoy the soft sound of the water. Then, glance up to appreciate the rich, wrap-around, wooden balcony on the second level.

The next courtyard is outlined in yellow, with bright pink flowers perched on windowsills high above. Below the terraces and balconies are rooms filled with art or with books. Many don’t know that the cultural center hosts an extensive library.

The center hosts a free cultural movie every Wednesday and one of my favorite photo expositions – Laberintos III – just wrapped up. A few weeks ago Espacioce! hosted a flamenco show outside, in the shadow of ancient ruins.

Does anyone else take advantage of the art and cultural events hosted at Espacioce!? What have been some of your favorites?

Theme Day: Night

Antigua's Jazz Festival: Quinteto de Jazzuv

Night is the subject for the Theme Day of the City Daily Photo community, which every first of the month synchronizes over a hundred cities around the world over a single theme.

An enchanting night photo of La Antigua Guatemala must have a number of required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; which, in my humble opinion, these are: first of all—people, a spot-illuminated ruin, a street scene, an inviting atmosphere, music or music concert if at all possible (make it jazz concert), poetry, warm and friendly companionship, silhouettes may come handy and comfortable temperate weather. I am happy to report that all these characteristics were present at the time this photo was taken of the Quinteto Jazzuv. You may need to click the image above to see all the details. ;-)

Thanks for visiting and please make an effort to visit to the other participating cities around the planet. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
