Since Santiago Apostol is the patron saint of Antigua Guatemala, previously Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, it is no wonder you find all kinds statues, paintings, murals, et cetera with Saint James imagery. This mural was found inside the Santiago Apostol private clinic near barrio de San Sebastian. By the way, in case you didn’t know, Antigua Guatemala is organised by barrios, neighbourhoods pues.
Does anyone know how many barrios there are and what are their names?
Wednesday night we had the opportunity to listen to The McNally Smith Fusion Ensemble performed for about an hour and a half as part of “XIII Festival de Jazz de Guatemala” at the atrium of the former college of the Compañía de Jesús in Antigua Guatemala. It was a breath-taking performance.
The “XIII Festival de Jazz de Guatemala” started on Friday, March 8, with a performance by Alessio Menconi Trio with Marco Panascia and Paolo Orlandi from Italy, but because I’ve have been overwhelmed with the transformation of the upcoming issue of REVUE magazine, I was not able to attend. Ditto for the show by Beat Kaestli of Switzerland on Thursday night. There is still one more concert by Abe Rábade Trio (Spain) on Saturday night which I do not plan to miss at all. I will bring you an update in this last presentation. Stay tuned!

Last night was the presentation of Vocal People at Ermita de la Santa Cruz ruins, Antigua Guatemala’s concert venue, as part of the XII Festival Internacional de Cultura Paiz. Voca People brought a musical show featuring popular songs by the only means of a cappella and beatbox, sans any other musical instrument. The Saturday night presentation was the first of two performances, being the second show tonight at 7 p.m. at Ermita de la Santa Cruz. This is the first time Voca People visit Guatemala with their unique and engaging show. Once again, Fundación Paiz has brought a first-class show as part of the XII Festival Internacional de Cultura Paiz.
Below you can look at a slide show and video clip showing the Voca People performance.
The night of February 1 was chosen as the inauguration of XII Festival Internacional de Cultura Paiz to be held for ten days in Antigua Guatemala. The night was filled with the sounds of the big band music of the Bob Porter’s Orchestra and happy rhythms of pop, rock, latino and ska by the Guatemalan band Malacates Trébol Shop. There will be many more cultural events for the next ten days, some of them paid and the rest for free.
We have to be grateful because the Fundación Paiz has chosen La Antigua Guatemala is the default venue for their international cultural festival as we get to experience many high quality cultural events for free.
“The son of The King” was the song used to introduce Julian Marley, Bob Marley’s son at the most recent reggae concert in Antigua Guatemala fabulous venue, Ermita de La Santa Cruz. As you can see in the pictures below, all reggae lovers were present to listing to the songs of Bob Marley performed by his son as well as his original repertoire.
Reggae, perfect weather, astonish venue and dramatic lighting were the perfect elements to have great mood and music for the entire night.
Graffiti and Stencil street art is not commonly found in Antigua Guatemala, so every time I find one I capture it with my camera. That is because of the ephemeral nature of graffiti and stencil art. A few captures found in the archives of AntiguaDailyPhoto are Rigoberta Menchú for President from 2007, and Wonder Woman from August 2012. By the way, the stencil art piece above I found it on the entrance to San Juan del Obispo.
Once again, what’s your opinion regarding stencil street art? Do you think there should be more or less of it?
If you’re not in Antigua Guatemala right now, you don’t know what you’re missing. Well, I will help you know what you’re missing by not being in Antigua Guatemala. Let’s start with a photo festival, an orchid exposition, a haunting music nights.
Last Friday night was magical with melodic and enchanting music performed by musicians Ishto Juevez and Ixtapoch Vallenas inside the gardens of the Compañía de Jesús Building in Antigua Guatemala. The weather and temperatures were just perfect, the night was lit by a full moon and the musicians by colourful spotlights that not only highlighted the musicians but also the amazing venue that is the Cooperación Española. Below I share with you some of Ishto Juevez music and video clip for one of his most popular songs and a photo gallery of the night. Enjoy!
Rudy, I discovered your blog as soon as I returned from a too-short 4 day trip to Guatemala in May 2006. Through your camera lens, you've taught me so much about the place that I fell in love with so quickly. I especially appreciate when you write your thoughts, observations, opinions, and give information about your subjects. You've given me true affection for the marimba through the music you've posted, & you've taken me on virtual trips back to La Antigua Guatemala through your videos and sound clips. You've challenged my ideas about Guatemala, and surprised me with the breadth of culture in your little city. Your blog is like a little vacation every day. Thank you so much for the years of absolute pleasure. You never disappoint; this is a big accomplishment! Congratulations, and please don't stop. —Janna
