Everyone Burns Firecrackers in Guatemala for Christmas

Everyone Burns Firecrackers in Guatemala

Christmas Day is a very quiet and easy-going day in Guatemala. But, it does not begins like that. On the contrary, right at midnight and for what seems like forever, Guatemalans burn firecrackers, fire whistlers, fireworks and every kind of pyrotechnic stuff; the list is long. This pyromaniac act repeats again at noon and at 6 p.m.; other than that, it is a quiet day. 😉

As a matter of fact, let’s compile a list of all the cohetes, canchinflines, estrellitas, volcancitos, ametralladoras, et-cetera and their English translations to have an idea how pyromaniac Guatemalans really are. Everyone is invited to participate.

  1. Hi Rudy – wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas and New Year with many many thanks for your wonderful photos and comments through the year. Please, please, in time for next Christmas – would you turn some of your Christmas photos into Christmas cards – I would love to have sent some to friends but by the time I saw them, it was too late to buy photos from you to send as cards – but then I thought it would be brilliant if you could offer them as cards.

Keep up the good work – it’s really appreciated!

  2. Rudy, ¡Feliz Navidad y prosero año nuevo! I’m always amazed at the prolific use of pyrotechnics in Guatemala to celebrate everything from Christmas to los cumpleaños de una abuelita. Your series on Christmas deco has been fun 🙂
I second Gillian’s request for cards featuring your photos. I was going to do it myself, but I also waited too long to get started ordering photos and making the cards 🙁

    • Babooshka, well, the fireworks are not that impressive, to be honest, what’s impressive is the fact they are burnt everywhere by all the people, not just a big show in a single spot. Although that single fireworks show also happens at the Calle del Arco.
