Nobody walks in LA… everybody walks in Antigua
“Nobody walks in LA…” goes the song. In Antigua is the opposite. People enjoy walking and with such small grid (about 10×10 block), you can certainly do just about all your chores faster by walking than by driving. Besides many blocks are one-way only which means you have to drive four to six blocks to park your car half-a-block away. Besides the utilitarian walks, people tend to take strolls and to see people and talk to friends and acquaintances on the streets.
Side note: You will not believe that behind the yellow wall is a mansion. Well, Antigüeño architecture is very deceiving. They like their houses to be very simple and plain on the outside, but as soon as you enter through the driveway (Zaguán in Spanish), you are not in Kansas anymore.

I like this kind of architecture and the private worlds it creates.
ps Thanks for the link. (It’s true. No one walks in L.A.)

Great post! The muted colours create a nice mood and the tired air of the building is at odds with the youth of the children.

Lisi, thanks for your compliments. You know I follow your steps, watch it!
Marie, yeah the door looks familiar, where have I seen it?
Edwin, I do not use filters and I do not retouch my photos except for auto-levels to remove a color cast. The rich colours you like are due to the lime-stone-based paints (see my post for July 16th) and the quality of light at this part of the world.
Luggi, it looks like this is the only way I can make you come down south.
Neorelix, nice contrast I agree. There is even a blurred bird on the sky to ad a little more movement to the whole scene.

[...] With the holidays of Semana Santa La Antigua Guatemala goes from a tiny peaceful, colorful colonial town to a maddening craze-driven-crowds city like New York City or Tokyo where you can barely walk. [...]

I loved walking in Antigua. It’s easy to learn the whole town within 2 days. You will miss something if you drive.
