Violet or Purple bands mark the Lent Season

During the Lent period (Cuaresma in Spanish) many houses and businesses are decorated with purple or violet strips of textiles and bands as the one above seen at the Santo Domingo Hotel.

    Beautiful, and so traditional. I thought it was for a funeral (which in a way it is… originally)

    Cuaresma (careme in French) doesn’t apply here in Australia – they only kept the Mardi Gras, and in a very un-religious way (see my post a couple of days ago!!!)

    That photograph makes me feel sentimental — reminding me of my childhood church that decorated in purple as well. (My current church is more of the modern flair and hasn’t mentioned Lent at all. Kind of sad.) So the pic encourages me to stop and think about Lent and its meaning. Thank you!

    Hablando de hoteles 5 estrellas, ahora que veo la entrada del Santo Domingo, me pregunté ¿que hará el susodicho hotel para evitar la construcción de otro 5 estrellas en los terrenos de la otrora Fabrica de Hilados Hunapú, ese gran lote baldío entre las ruinas de Candelaria y la Colonia Hunapú?

    Derrepente nos avenas unas fotos del area para ver el “progreso” de la Antigua.

    Por cierto, en la sección de parques, no has incluído el parquecito de arriba de la Colonia Candelaria…relativamente nuevo, pero está chilero.

    Ah, I have been here too, and loved the beautiful hotel, museums, and was very interested in all of the preservation on the site. I hope to return to Antigua in a couple of years and revisit all of these sites.

    Nathalie: The same can be said about the U.S., where most people do not even celebrate the Holy Week, which is simply call the Spring Break. I believe in many parts of the world, religious traditions are being phased out.
