Feb. 2 Dia de Candelaria

The 6th of January is El Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos (and my mom’s bday as well-haha), but from what I remember (back in Guate) this was the day that signaled to us that we could start putting our decorations away. Actually, we still uphold that here. The Christmas Tree is still in my parents’ house shining brightly for all to see…as are all the decorations. Now, is there an official date? Probably.

Some people use to take all Christmas decorations away on January 6th, the day of the Three Wise Men, Catholics call that feast “Epiphany” which celebrates the revelation of God to mankind in human form.

If you follow the “Guadalupe Reyes” tour you would be too hung over (or still drunk) for Epiphany. Some people will leave their Nativity sets until the 2nd of February, day of our Lady of Candelaria. I recall seeing on TV two (or three) lifetimes ago a description of the astrological meaning of el dos de Candelaria by Walter Mercado… talking ’bout syncretism.

Those of you who said January 6th are forgetting how passionate are the antigüeños about their celebrations. Last year, I gave you the range of dates that encompasses the ‘official’ Christmas season in La Antigua Guatemala which begins on December 8th, with the celebration of Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, and ends on February 2nd with the celebration of the Virgin of Candelaria.

February 2?! Wow. That’s a long time to celebrate Christmas. I wish they would do that here in Jamaica!
