Antigua Guatemala’s Streets Without Cars

Antigua Guatemala's Streets Without Cars BY RUDY GIRON

This week as part of the excessive security for the XXVI Cumbre Iberoamericana, 26th Ibero American Summit of Heads of States and Government, we experienced how it would feel to have streets without, a mostly pedestrian Antigua Guatemala. Some hated it, but the majority felt it was wonderful to be able to walk around without cars on the streets.

Mrs. Gavi from the iconic Tienda de Doña Gavi stated the general sentiment of most people:

Qué maravilloso fue caminar por las calles de Antigua Guatemala sin trafico, sin carros por ningún lado, sin cuida carros!
Qué día tan hermoso pasé! Había una Paz y Tranquidad impresionante!

Si tan solo hubieran más Parqueos en las afueras podriamos tener una Ciudad peatonal maravillosa como la del dia de Hoy ! Inolvidable!!! —Gavi, from Tienda de Doña Gavi

What a wonderful experience to be able to walk through the streets of Antigua Guatemala without traffic, without cars anywhere, without car watchers!

What a beautiful day I had, there was peace and an impressive tranquility!

If only we had more parking spaces outside the city we could have a wonderful pedestrian town, just like the one I enjoyed today. Unforgettable!!! —Gavi, from Tienda de Doña Gavi
